Holiday weekend with COVID-19 restrictions lifted brings sense of normalcy to Cape Cod

HYANNIS, Mass. – It was an explosive vacation weekend on Cape Cod. Tourists returned in droves as people stepped out and celebrated the lifting of all COVID-19 restrictions in Massachusetts.

“I was side by side with people for the first time in a year and over, so I loved it. Get back to normal, ”said Mitchell Clark, a resident of Dennis.

In some cities, restaurant sales have broken records.

According to Elizabeth Wurfbain, executive director of the Hyannis Main Street Improvement District, the numbers were out of the ordinary, with big parties enjoying in-room dining. At the Duck Inn Pub on Main Street, some guests have been turned away after reaching capacity.

“It was electric,” said bartender Kody Cahoon. “It was great, everyone just arrived. And it’s good to reopen it. ”

Down the road, Common Ground Cafe reported having had its busiest Sunday since the start of the pandemic.

“Just really, really busy,” manager Joe Goldovitz explained. “Everyone seemed to be having fun, no one was impatient, something like that. Everyone seemed in a very good mood.

Many tourists stayed inside due to the rain over the weekend.

Patric Harrington, from Arlington, said he and his family spent much of their time playing board games at a home in Brewster. They did check out a few local stores, however.

“We did the Cuffys race. We gave all the kids their sweatshirts at Cuffys.

While Monday was quieter with people returning home, business owners said they were very optimistic this summer will be busy.

“All the reservations are over, everyone who comes in is spending, they have money to spend,” said Lynn Mitchell, owner of Ms. Mitchell’s Gifts. “Everyone seems happy to be going out.”
