Joseph Pera, best known as the creator and star of Adult Swim’s Joe Pera speaks with you, appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers and shares the big news of being the next James Bond. Read on to find out what Joe Pera did on the “Property On M&M.”
Joe Pera as James Bond…
Joe Pera appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Wednesday, July 20, and was asked by Seth about what’s next after Joe Pera Talks With You, ending after three seasons. In his response, Pera revealed the big news, saying, “Just the next week, I got a phone call,” he said. “They asked me to be the next James Bond.” It’s a different direction for 007. Instead of being a British sex fiend, Bond will now be a “single American.”
Bond “now lives in Philadelphia, eats pre-packaged Boar’s Head sandwiches for breakfast and lunch, learns to play guitar on YouTube, and is very afraid of dogs,” Pera said. He gives the Bond people “lots of credit for trying to freshen it up… They’re taking a risk, but I don’t see how it’s not working.” Pera also dropped the first music video for the upcoming film. I already love him more than Spectrum.
When asked if he had shot anything yet, Joe replied, “It’s funny you ask, because they actually wanted me to show the first clip. Seth asked, “Is this like a teaser clip?” Joe replied, “Yeah, that was very early in the shoot – hopefully that doesn’t give too much away. But that’s it — James Bond is on his first mission. Seth asked, “Is that all we need to know?”
Joe replied, “Pretty much.” Seth played the long-awaited clip saying that “This is, I guess, the first look at Joe Pera as the new James Bond. Here’s a clip of him on his first assignment. And you won’t believe the clip shows Joe Pera running in his baggy shirt and pants across the street as a car passes.
A confused Seth asked him, “I’m left with more questions than answers, I feel like. But…then it seemed like it started with a man who spat. Joe replied, “Yes, we were filming and he just walked up to the camera and spat something out. And you know, sometimes the movie part embraces imperfections, so we decided to keep it. So yeah, part of the new James Bond angle too.
Speaking about the James Bond set, Seth said he always imagined it was really locked down and not a situation where a guy could just drive through the set. Joe replied, “We actually put an ad on Craigslist that said, Drive if you feel like it.”
The lost James Bond…
Seth asked, “Do you have any more? I mean the appetite is obviously whetted here. Joe replied, “Yeah, there’s another one from the middle of the movie.” Joe said it might be hard to figure out what’s going on, but I think – I think you will, I think it will make sense when you play it. In this clip, Joe was seen rolling a garbage bag while walking down the sidewalk and ended up throwing it away.
Seth laughed and asked, “I don’t know what’s going on here.” Joe revealed that this is a scene where James Bond is pissed that people are throwing trash away faster than he can pick it up. Seth says, “He looks like a broken man at the end.” He ends up throwing away the bag of litter.
When asked about the film’s title, Joe Pera revealed that “The working title is James Bond!, with an exclamation mark after it.” Pera couldn’t hold back the laughter at her own jokes. Seth made sense saying, “Yeah, so let people know it’s more exciting than the James Bond you’re used to.”
James Bond’s final act…
Joe Pera said he didn’t want to spoil the ending, but he has another clip with the final act. Seth said he felt it would spoil the ending. Joe said, “Well, I don’t know. Do you want to see the ending scene? The audience cheered and Seth performed the final act.
In the final scene, Joe as James Bond was seen eating pizza and looking out the window. Joe explained the scene, saying, “So I didn’t want to do this – the writers – I wasn’t going to do it at first, but then the writers said there was character development shown by, at In the end, he decides he wants to get the chicken, rice, and beans from a take-out lunch on the street instead of eating a pre-packaged sandwich again.
Seth said: “It’s great to see him in a baseball cap. I feel like you rarely see James Bond, one of the previous James Bonds – Did you have a favorite actor before you, obviously, did you have a favorite actor who played James Bond. Joe said, “They’re all so good.” Seth said, “I don’t know, but there’s definitely a way Bond talks”, and wondered if all the clips were devoid of dialogue.
Seth then asked, “Are you in the body of this, do you actually speak and do you have some of those Bondy-like lines? Joe said, “Yeah, we’re working on the classic lines right now. Everyone knows some of them, but yes. I was doing – was working on the only scene where I do the big line. He then pulled out two sheets and gave one to Seth Meyers, who plays the bartender. Here is the role play:
Seth Meyers (Bartender): Here’s your IPA. What is your name?
Joe Pera: My name is James Bond, what is your name? (this is the simplest James Bond intro)
Bartender: Pete Buttigieg. I am the transport secretary.
Joe: What are you doing in Philadelphia?
Bartender: Oh, just hanging out…
At the end of their conversation, Seth Meyers said he was starting to worry about the new James Bond. Joe joked, the only way it could fail is if we didn’t ask Pete to play himself. When asked about the film’s budget, Joe said the reason we’re trying to get Pete in the film is that he would embezzle transportation funds. Do you like the sketch and the new James Bond, huh?
