Youth and early career
RuPaul Andre Charles, or simply RuPaul, was born on November 17, 1960 in San Diego, California. He is the youngest of three siblings. He and his brothers were raised by their mother, Ernestine “Tony” Charles when his parents separated in 1967.
RuPaul and his sister Renettea traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to study performing arts when they were fifteen. He struggled as a filmmaker and musician in the 1980s, working at the venerable Plaza Theatre.
He sang as a backup singer for Glen Meadmore at venues such as the Celebrity Club. In 1989, he got his first break as a dancer in the B-52’s “Love Shack” music video.

RuPaul released the dance/house album “Supermodel of the World” in 1993 under Tommy Boy’s rap label. The song “Supermodel (You Better Work)” and accompanying music video was an instant hit on MTV.
The song peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. The singles/videos “Back to My Roots” and “A Shade Shady (Now Prance)” both reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts.

On June 10, 2019, he launched his daytime talk show “RuPaul”, which aired on the Fox TV channels across the country. RuPaul’s first makeup line and beauty collection were launched in 2013 in collaboration with Colorevolution, a cosmetics company. The unisex “Glamazon” fragrance was also released to accompany the collection.
According to RuPaul: “That’s the name you can give me. You are free to talk to me as she” and has shown a lack of interest in gender pronouns when referring to himself. He appears in public as a male and as a drag queen.
He has been married to Georges LeBar since 1994 and is LGBT. They met at New York City’s Limelight nightclub and married in January 2017. LeBar is a painter who owns a ranch in Wyoming.

RuPaul bought a lavish 10,300 square foot property in Beverly Hills for $13.7 million in October 2019. In 2011, they paid $2.5 million for their final home.
They tried to sell the old house for $5 million in 2018, but were unsuccessful. He’s owned a $350,000 apartment in New York City for almost 25 years. He bought a condo in West Hollywood, California for $600,000 in 2007.
